Basketball Nova Scotia is excited to announce the addition of four new members to its Board of Directors. With their diverse expertise, leadership, and passion for basketball, these individuals will contribute to BNS’s ongoing mission to develop and promote basketball across the province.
Vernelle Johnson
Vernelle Johnson brings a wealth of experience in both business and basketball. As the Manager of Customer Success at Nova Scotia Power, he focuses on improving customer experience and operational efficiency. Beyond his professional role, Vernelle is deeply committed to basketball, serving as an assistant coach for both the Halifax Grammar School and Dalhousie University men's basketball teams. His background as a former varsity player at UPEI and his MBA from Dalhousie University add to his extensive qualifications. As an African Nova Scotian, Vernelle’s focus on diversity and inclusion will be instrumental in fostering an inclusive environment within Basketball Nova Scotia. His combination of business acumen and coaching experience promises to bring valuable insights to the board.
Lucas Wide
With over 20 years of experience in strategic communications, Lucas Wide is well-equipped to support BNS’s growth through his expertise in messaging and outreach. Currently a communications advisor for the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union (NSGEU), Lucas has also worked with Sport Nova Scotia. A former Bedford Eagles player, Lucas has a deep-rooted connection to the local basketball community. He is a passionate coach, serving various teams including Provincial and High School squads. As the technical director for Bedford Basketball and a coach for his daughter’s U10 team, Lucas founded the Bedford Elite Spring program to provide local youth with more opportunities in the sport. His skills in communications and coach development will play a key role in driving the future of basketball in the region.
Kathleen Franklin
Kathleen Franklin brings a strong financial and leadership background to the BNS board. As the Senior Director of Regulatory Affairs and Registrar at CPA Nova Scotia, Kathleen is a Chartered Professional Accountant with over 30 years of experience in public accounting and senior financial leadership. Beyond her professional career, Kathleen has a longstanding connection to basketball, coaching her daughters with the ABA Celtics and contributing to fundraising efforts. She is also a parent of two varsity basketball players at Saint Mary’s University (SMU). Kathleen’s extensive financial expertise, coupled with her passion for the sport, will greatly benefit the BNS board in shaping the future of basketball in Nova Scotia.
Katrina Roberts
Katrina Roberts, an HR professional with a focus on performance management and inclusive hiring practices, is passionate about promoting a positive, inclusive environment both in the workplace and within sports. As the HR Coordinator at Autism Nova Scotia, Katrina has developed expertise in organizational policy and wellness programs, which will be vital as BNS continues its efforts to grow the sport across the province. A lifelong basketball fan, Katrina has supported her daughter’s team in the Metro Basketball Association through her involvement with the Dartmouth Lakers. Her dedication to creating inclusive opportunities within basketball aligns perfectly with BNS’s values, and her experience in human resources will provide an invaluable perspective to the board.
